The quest for weight loss has become an epidemic in America. People of all ages and sizes try anything to shed a few pounds. In a recent Greenfield Online/Ciao Surveys census representative omnibus survey, over 1,000 North American respondents were asked about their experience with attempting to lose a few pounds.

Respondents were asked which of the following diets they had tried:

Atkins diet 17%
Slim-fast 17%
Weight Watchers 16%
Low Fat diet 14%
Cabbage Soup diet 10%
South Beach diet 9%
Grapefruit diet 8%
Other 8%

Zone diet 2%
Scarsdale diet 2%
Chocolate diet 1%
Negative Calorie diet 1%
Raw Food diet 1%

Notably, 5% of respondents stated that they gained weight as a result of the diet, 29% lost a bit of weight, 13% lost a lot of weight, and 53% stayed the same. Out of the respondents who lost weight on one of the diet plans, 16% lost 1-5lbs, 26% lost 6-10lbs, 17% lost 11-15lbs, 15% lost 16-20lbs, 12% lost 21-30lbs, and 14% lost 31+lbs.

So often people try to stick to a diet and quickly fall off the wagon. Respondents were asked how much weight they had gained back since their most successful diet. The chart below highlights the statistics. (Answers were not mutually exclusive)
